#JanuaryJoy: Refresh your Style

Hello Readers!

HNY to you all. 2014 was certainly a blur but I enjoyed the pace of the final two weeks where I had the time off work to spend with Hubby and son. Returning to work on Monday was a big struggle!

I know I didn’t recap what I wore in December but I’m sure you were all too busy enjoying your festive periods to care anyway πŸ˜‰ Thank you to all those of you that joined in with #fffestivefun – it was lovely to see your interpretation of the daily prompts.

January can be a bit of a mixed bag. With the Media serving up initiatives like DryathalonΒ (all for good causes though), the inevitable return to the norm (be that work, school or just regular life after the buzz of Christmas) and the fact that it can be so long until Pay Day for some, it’s not surprising that January is often billed as a depressing month.

However, fear not! This month’s What to Buy features some great pieces that you’ll mostly find in the remains of the Sale, and as some of you may be on a budget, nothing exceeds Β£40. Coupled with Rebecca’s #JanuaryJoy, we can make this years Jan a bright one!

A Classic Jumper

My love for J Crew knows no bounds and although my American boss doesn’t know what all the fuss is about (“It’s like M&S isn’t it?”… erm No!), the Tippi Jumper is one of my favourite pieces. Bracelet length sleeves and a close enough fit to be worn smart or casually, the Tippi is a good alternative to a T-shirt for the Spring. These two colours are reduced in the sale and are actually great Spring colours. Uniqlo and Gap are also good places to find really good alternatives, also in Merino Wool.

J Crew / Uniqlo / Gap

An Oversized Knit

These are everywhere and since the winter months firmly still with us, you’d get a lot of wear out of it. I wear mine either as a Jumper dress for work or with faux leather leggings for easy weekend wear. I especially like the camel H&M style – not a massive lover of a polo neck, this is loose enough to be cosy and not make me look too top heavy.

H&M / H&M / M&SΒ / Topshop

Something Lilac

This notorious “Granny” shade is set to be big for SS15. Ranging from the palest purple to something more Neon Parma Violet, it would be a good time to pick up one of these pieces to add to your wardrobe as a nod to Spring, but at AW14 sale prices.

New Look / Clarks / H&M / ASOS

The Magpie in me will never die and anything Sparkly always cheers me up. The F&F flats above have a whiff of Tabitha Simmonds about them. For Β£7 just click and collect with your weekly shop. Also, I’ve mentioned this shirt before, and now it’s in the sale πŸ˜‰

H&M / F&F / Zara / Monica Vinader

Again, lace was big on the SS15 collection catwalks and you could easily nod to the trend early with something you pick up now. Granted, the lace seen on the Runways was beautiful pastels and whites, but really, lace is lace right and these colours are much easier to wear in January…

Next / Next / Whistles / ZaraΒ

So what do you think readers? Will you choose something here to brighten up your Jan? My Month has kicked off with our Renovation Project starting at home – meaning we’ve had to move out for a while. I’ll be back later in the month with “How I Wore” January but please forgive any less than salubrious places that my outfit post pictures are taken from. #realliferules after all πŸ˜‰

Friday Frock O’clock

After last weeks dress which was edgy and interesting, but not represented well by the way it had been photographed, I was left considering some of the comments. Like Kirsty, I find many of the current dress styles cut oddly with a high waist, but really it’s more than fashion that’s the problem. Dare I say it, we’re all getting a little bit older. I don’t want a thigh or bum skimming skirt, or a dress that doesn’t flatter womanly curves. We’re not in our late teens anymore but that doesn’t mean we don’t want flattering, confidence boosting dresses that make us look great. I can find 100 and 1 dresses that fit the bill, but the challenge is in finding the right price. This week I think I’ve done it.

Lace Insert Shift Dress, Topshop Β£46

I tried this dress on when I was looking for something to wear to the SMV Weddings Launch party in London. I wanted to look grown up but on trend and a bit different to all the Vintage style I knew would be worn there. I spotted this dress in Topshop and was drawn to the cut out detail, flatteringly filled in with lace, and the red/orange shade that I’m currently lusting over.

When worn it’s far more flattering than it’s Β£46 price tag suggests with more than a whiff of Whistles about it. It fitted my body shape, highlighted the narrowest part of the waist yet didn’t cling anywhere, hit just above the knee and for once, had plenty of room for a decent bust. For those of you sick of teen-esque dresses but not ready for LK Bennet and Hobbs, I’d recommend checking it out.

So what do you think readers?

Friday Frock O’clock

It’s no secret that I’m not a lover of black. That’s not to say I dislike it on other people but it’s not a colour I like on myself. Recently though, I’ve fallen for a new trend, monochrome, particularly when the trend makes use of lace.

The other trend that feels current right now is the not just longer but fuller skirts I’m seeing. This dress combines both and a hint of tulle thrown in. It’s pushing all my buttons.

Ankara dress by Beloved at OASIS – Β£79

Available from OASIS but by Beloved, (OASIS are stocking a few handpicked items from other brands that share their aesthetic,) it’s feminine yet striking and feels modern.

Do you like it readers? Have a great weekend!

Spotted: New Paperself London Skyline lashes

Thus far I have restrained myself largely from participating in the various patriotic and sporting events that are gracing our fair isle this year. This isn’t through any major dislike of the events, more that I figure if I’m sick of hearing about something, then so must you be and why regurgitate content that is coming at you left right and centre already?

This week however, I was sent the latest Paperself designs including their London collection and loved their unique take on this year’s events. Consider this the Florence Finds nod to London 2012.

Featuring a lash depicting the iconic London skyline and buildings such as the London Eye and the Gherkin, I thought it was pretty clever. That and the bear hats styling and I was sold! πŸ™‚ For those of you feeling more feminine there’s also an (English) Rose design to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee.

Last but not least, Paperself have teamed up with the V&A to produce the Lace collection. Given the brief of Lace by the V&A, their team was inspired by French silk bobbin lace from the nineteenth century. Very lady-like indeed.

So, anyone for dressing up like a soldier in bear hats this morning, whilst sporting London lashes?

PS. Come back for a little, big, HUGE announcement at lunchtime. I’m just a bit excited!

Friday Frock O’clock

Firstly, after a brief absence from the blog I wanted to say a humongous thank you to all of you for your birthday wishes and to Gemma for taking the reins for a wee while so I could take a break – it really made yesterday extra extra special. πŸ™‚ There’s loads more to share with you but for now, it’s on with the show, with Friday Frock.

Last week, whilst I was browsing MANGO, this simple but stunning dress caught my eye. It strikes me as the perfect dress. Not only is it both stand-out-from-the-crowd bright – an almost neon shade, but it’s also lace, both bang on in terms of current trends.

Red Lace dress – MANGO Β£59.99

Look a bit further however and this is the kind of dress you’ll never regret giving wardrobe space to. Perfect with opaque tights and black accessories in winter, it will be equally at home this summer at a wedding with nude accessories, or on holiday with leather flip flops and a cross body bag. I like to get my money’s worth from clothes and can’t see this one going wrong at any occasion.

Have a bright and beautiful weekend readers πŸ˜‰

PS. Do not fear, I have an onslaught of What-to-Wear type posts to share the birthday shenanigans with you all, including THE dress, purchased yesterday. You’ll just have to wait a little longer… πŸ˜‰
