Give it some Stick

When it comes to beauty I am Lazy. You will never find me luxuriating in hours to do my makeup and hair before a night out but I do enjoy mixing it up a little with different looks. I want impact and good results, but fast. There seems to be a real trend for crayon type lip products recently which appeal to me for their ‘slick on’ ease and I’ve tried a few so I thought I’d round them up here and see if any of you had any recommendations?

Revlon Colourburst Matte Balm and Lacquer
I was drawn to the colours of these and I love a Matte lip but I was really disappointed to find that despite the ‘balm’ name, they were super drying on the lip. I do suffer from dry lips so perhaps I’m not the best judge – I’d be really interested to hear if you liked these. I also though the colour range was a little limited. The lacquer was more moisturising but in a strange range of shades that didn’t suit my skin and still nowhere near a ‘balm’.

Clinique Chubby Stick £17
The original fat pencil lip product, this is like a cross between a balm and a lipstick with good colour density and a moisturising formula. It’s moisturising and has a good range of less outrageous colours perfect for your work bag.

H&M Lip Pen £2.99
I picked one of these up on a whim in H&M whilst shopping because I thought for the princely sum of £2.99 it could hardly disappoint. I wasn’t wrong as it is lovely and soft, moisturising on the lip and the colour builds as you apply. Of course there are only a few shades and the peachy shade I chose is really better for summer, but definitely worth a try for the price! 🙂

Have you tried any of these or can you recommend a new moisturising lip colour for me?

  1. I love love love the Clinique Chubby Sticks – I have several (bought on a certain auction site for £10 each, ahem).

I get super dry lips and these are perfect for avoiding the cracked colour look that I get with a lot of glosses/lipsticks.

  2. 17 do a good one that has a moisturising lip balm on the other end. Recently rediscovered them as they are so cheap but just as good as top brands. Their bronzer shimmer block is THE SAME product as the Bobbi brown block but 30quid cheaper! Amaze!

  3. I also was drawn to the Revlon ones and though the colours were great they were super drying and not so much cheaper than the chubby stick to justify getting them. I LOVE Clinique chubby sticks, as lipstick rarely stays on for me, but these build and can be layered without drying out my massively dry lips. I’ll be reading the reader recommendations with interest and will check out the h and m ones too.

  4. I have a Topshop Lip Crayon that I love, think it’s about £7. I wear it over lip balm so not sure about it’s moisturising properties. Sadly the shade I love is no more though.

  5. I had a make-up trial for my upcoming wedding recently and the make up lady said that the chubby sticks are very popular but she’s found that the colour doesn’t last very long, what do you think? I too have dry lips and I need to find something for my wedding day that won’t need to be reapplied constantly and isn’t really drying. Any recommendations would be fab!

    • That’s tough, I think a traditional lipstick is better in those circumstance and you cant go wrong with MAC. I have a creme sheen one and a matte one and both last for ages but I would say the staying power is in how you apply it. Look after your lips before the day and apply a light layer then blot and re-apply. For extra staying power you ca also separate the layers of a tissue, gently press onto the lips and apply pressed powder over the tissue. Some goes through and ‘sets’ the lip colour even more. I do this if I’m going out but in general am too lazy hence the above!

      • In answer to Jen’s query above, for colour with extreme stayability (totally a word!) I always rely on NARS matte lipsticks, applied with a brush, pressing it in to the lip. It would last for days if I let it.. I’m fastidious about removing make up properly before bed… even when (ahem) inebriated, however I often wake up with a slight colour stain the next morning.

        lip liner also helps!

        • Thank you so much, someone else recommended MAC and I love some of NARs over products but I haven’t tried their lip stuff so may give that a try. I’m currently on strict instructions to use BodyShop’s Lipscuff and lots of lip balm to try to sort out the dryness!

  6. Another vote for the Clinique chubby sticks, I just got given one as a present and it’s lovely (though not as moisturising as my all time favourite, Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream tinted lip protectant). I’ve used the Maybelline crayon in the past which is nice for colour but also very drying. That H&M one looks like a good bargain buy!

  7. Love a chubby stick too. Bobbi brown lipsticks aren’t drying and really last. Bargain find recently tinted balm type things from mabelline- called baby lips- cheap at 2.99 tho not the best choice of colours but really moisturising x
