Bitten

Winter is slowly approaching and I don’t know about you, but the can’t-make-up-its-mind weather flashing from mild to chilly with winds, the return of central heating and cosy evenings under a blanket are all playing havoc with my lips.

I am a total lip balm addict, and I say that not alluding to the rubbish brands that seem to make you want to re-apply every five minutes, but with reference to the fact that I have enough of them to keep one in every regularly occupied room of the house. I have several on the go in each handbag I’m using and apply religiously day and night. So I don’t mind considering myself something of an expert!

I thought that if I am suffering then now would be a good time to share my favourite balms and a few famous faces, then ask for your recommendations to keep your lips super soft all winter…

1. Original Chapstick. The original and the best, this isn’t just cheap and cheerful but has a slightly medicinal smell guaranteed to transport you back to childhood memories. Ideal for a quick lunchtime purchase on those days you’ve left yours at home.
2. Bobbi Brown’s Lip Balm. The Queen of base also does, in my humble opinion, the absolute best lip balm out there. apply it at bed time and not only will your lips be perfect come morning, but they will still have the balm on them, it’s that good.
3. Eve Lom Kiss Mix. For a bit of posh for your pout, this is minty fresh and another ‘super soft’ balm that I hope to find in each years Christmas stocking.
4. Lush Honey Trap lip balm. Because I love honey, it smells amazing and again, really works.
5. Burt’s Bees Honey balm – Another honey balm, in a stick this time.
6. Philosophy Kiss Me lip balm. Alos available in clear or original, this comes in tinted formulations too, smells good and has the right moisturising but non-sticky consistency.
7. Smiths Minted Rose lip balm. An iconic brand and with a gorgeous range of designs, this one gets extra style points when you have to touch up at the table.
8. Korres Lip Butter. A recent find of mine, these are lovely and moisturising but also quite densely pigmented offering some fast colour for your lips. I’ve got the corally Quince for summer and rose pink Pomegranate for winter.

You might be wondering why I haven’t included the legendary Vaseline tins but I’ve got to just come out and say it… I don’t rate it. Vaseline just slides off my lips and leaves them drier than before after I’ve slid it around all over my face and I think it belongs in the self-perpetuating camp that cause the need for ongoing reapplication. Feel free to object in the comments box though!

In case you haven’t guessed, it’s Bobbi Brown’s Lip Balm that gets Florence’s gold star for being the best I’ve ever found.

So now it’s your turn. Can you recommend any of these or have I missed something you rely on in the winter months. Drop me a comment below and share your favourite ๐Ÿ™‚

Love,
Rebecca

  1. I agree with you Rebecca, about Vaseline although I have to admit it’s what I’m currently using. I LOVE M.A.C’s range of lip balms. Not only do they work but they taste quite nice (is it just me that finds the taste of some really weird?). Also love Rituals- Eve’s kiss. It’s very glossy though, but tastes like apples (oh sinful!).
    Xxx

  2. I have to say Carmex…I love it! In a tube or in that cute little pot, I swear by it and love that tingle u get when u slide it on. Mwah.

  3. Carmex is pretty good, but my all time favourite lip balms are actually available in Spain! They’re actually from รgatha Ruรญz de la Prada which is a kids shop (I think… my Spanish isn’t great) and they’re available in the most amazing flavours!

    xoxo

  4. *sticks up a tentative hand* I have a Vaseline tin in my handbag….I find it’s not too bad actually, as long as you don’t use too much in one go, then it does slide straight off!

I’ve tried the Burts Bee’s and the Philosophy (big fan of all things Philosophy!) ones and can def. give them the thumbs up.

My fav lipbalm though is a very retro choice – Body Shop Raspberry lip balm. Have been using it since I was a teenager and still haven’t found anything that works better for me ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. I’m allergic to many but my everyday staple is Boots Extracts Almond lip balm…it’s the closest replacement I could find when they stopped making their Olive & Almond Wonderbalm.
When things get really dry, it’s Blistex or Carmex for a couple of days.

Am hoping Father Christmas might bring me the By Terry Rose one to try!

  6. My lips are also a mess at the moment. The only saviour is Clinique Superbalm Lip Treatment. Not the lip glosses, although they arne’t bad, but the stuff in the green tube. ยฃ10 for the greatest lips you never knew you had.

Seriously ladies I will personally do a roadtrip around the UK and apply this to your lips now, right this second, and you will see what I mean. It is incredible – you only need a tiny amount. I like to apply before bed, then I wake up in the morning with Angelina-mouth.

That’s the only bit of Angelina I wake up with, unfortunately.

(By that I meant that only part of my body looking like Angelina. Not that I want to wake up with Angelina. Mr K might be slightly miffed if I did that. So might Brad.)

    • Anna, at the risk of sounding like a freaky stalker, you have the most pouty lips imaginable… thus, from this day forward I will also be using Clinique Superbalm Lip Treatment in an attempt to have Anna (not Angelina)-Style lips also!

Anna K lips > Angelina lips

  7. Carmex, Elizabeth Arden and Eve Lom are the only things that work for me.

I have hundreds of Rose & Co tins in my drawer/on my desk/next to my bed… they just don’t work for me, but they are so pretty! ๐Ÿ™

  8. Well as I mentioned in a previous post ๐Ÿ˜‰ Philosophy kiss me is the one for me. Love the minty cooling taste which plumps up your lips and as you say its just the right consistency!

However I have never tired the Bobbi brown one though so that is now on my Christmas list! Also not a fan of vaseline – too sticky for me…

    Fab post!

  9. On a recent shopping trip to John Lewis, the lady at the Sisley counter tried to sell me a pot of their Nutritive Lip Balm (which was lovely!), but at ยฃ39 I quickly made my excuses and left ๐Ÿ˜‰ ha, ha

  10. Hello ladies!!

Great to hear your suggestions… I really must try blister or carmex sometime.

While I’m here, please pop over to the FF Facebook page… I want to hear your thoughts on whether there’s an important topic I’m missing on FF ๐Ÿ˜‰

  11. I like Nivea SOS lip balm, Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream and my ultimate favourite is Body Shop lip butters. Am SO glad to see you say you’re an addict and have a couple in each bag Rebecca, I’m exactly the same!! Must admit the one in my work handbag today is Vaseline -agree not the best for lips but such a great multitasker!

Must add the Bobbi Brown one to my next shopping list…

  12. I get really chapped lips during winter and Jo Malone Vitamin E Lip Conditioner SPF 15 is the only one for me! It’s a bit pricey, think it’s just over ยฃ20 but it does work x

  13. i adore MACs tinted lip conditioner, in petting pink…. it keeps my lips all lovely with a cheeky tint and a bit of shine!

plus it means i get lots of kisses from the boy when my lips look saucy but not sticky!! ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. Another vote for Elizabeth Arden’s 8 Hour balm! I suffer with terribly dry lips in the winter and after trying lip balms over the years, with not great results, splashed out on the 8 hour cream. Worth every penny as it gets results and lasts ages.
