Spotted: Magpie Miller

Right now, I’m on a real mission to get some key areas of my home sorted out and it’s lead me to re-investigate some of my favourite online stores. (Remember when I first featured Magpie Miller in 2011?) Magpie Miller recently shot their latest offerings for their spring/summer collection and I loved the styling so had to take a second look…

I love the curated collection that Elissa oversees, mixing salvaged and re-loved pieces with decidedly modern bright and beautiful finds like these gorgeous geometric shapes. I can just imagine these hanging in a baby’s room or as a decorative feature in a modern home.

I thought I would share some of my favourite pieces and invite you to look around the rest of the store. I’ve got my eye on a few things – how pretty is the oh la la print and the mint green moon screen print? Or these 1960′s ombre pastel glasses? I’m imagining summer cocktails…

What’s your favourite Magpie Miller find?

DIY Destination Art

You might remember a little while ago Anna from Angel in The North shared her fab modern china DIY with you all. Today she is back with a brilliant tutorial on how to create your own DIY destination print. It’s a thoughtful idea for a first anniversary or as a gift for friends who have moved house or are getting married, plus it’s budget friendly.

Over to you Anna!

I made this ‘destination print’ for my brother and his wife when they bought their first house recently.

Their travels together, whether for work or holidays, are a big part of their history. For example, they spent an incredible couple of months working together on a project in New Zealand, my brother proposed in Sardinia and they were married at Trinity Chapel, Dublin.

They’d also moved around a lot in London, all the time saving up to buy a place of their own. When they finally achieved that milestone, I wanted to give them a gift that was a fitting reminder of their journey, and to make it even more personal I decided I would make it myself.

And I was pretty pleased with the outcome – as were they, thankfully. In fact my sister-in-law said she’d been admiring similar things online and, before I told her otherwise, she thought I’d bought it. Result!

I used Microsoft Publisher but you can use any programme that allows you to create text of different sizes. Start with a blank document and set up your page as A3 size.

The background should be set as black and your text white. The font I used – the most like London transport typography I could find – was Gill Sans.

As you can see the font is of different sizes – the most important thing is that each line is full from left to right. Your text will vary in height, and you can make some lines bold, but you should try and keep the space between the lines even.

As you can see, my print has 11 lines of text.

I found the easiest and neatest way of adding the text was to create a text box going from one side of the page to the other, before writing your text inside. You can either play around, increasing and decreasing the size of your text and text box, or highlight the text and use ‘autofit’, which can be found in the format menu.

I chose to list special places and events between my brother and his wife, but I also added in the title of their first dance at their wedding, ‘Here Comes The Sun.’ It fitted in quite nicely just above their sun-soaked honeymoon destinations.

But the text can be anything at all that you want it to be.

When you’re happy with the design, print it off and then fit it in a black Ikea Ribba frame.

And there you have a handmade, personalised print which is a great gift to give for birthdays, anniversaries and Christmas. And the best thing, especially in these austere times, is that it only cost you a few quid and a bit of your time.

Thank you so much Anna! I love the strong typographical look to this print in black and white but you could also customise it with different fonts and a coloured background. Do let us know if you’ll be trying this DIY!

Rebecca

Monday Must Have: Paperfashion

Image: Emerald Beauty by PaperFashion

At the moment, I’m in the process of updating our hanging decor – I’m looking for prints and images to update various spaces around our home. The two priorities are our bedroom and living room. Where we once had quite a retro industrial feel to the images, with photos of salvaged objects and archival drawings of butterflies, I’m feeling the need to change things up and moving towards more use of colour. In our bedroom I’d like some more feminine images with fashion illustrations and watercolours and one of my favourite illustrators is Katie Rodgers of PaperFashion so I thought I would share her work with you today.

The other reason for choosing this particular image is that this week, I’m following a bit of a theme for Florence Finds. Every year, Pantone announces a ‘colour of the year’ and this year it is Emerald. I have to say, although in design circles the announcement is thought to be very influential, I have been following the choices for the last couple of years and have never noticed them spark a huge trend. This year is no exception, however it has stolen my heart completely. I realised that I wear quite a bit of emerald green and am drawn to striking interiors where it is the main colour. So this week I’m going to share some Emerald (or just green) fashion choices, how I wear it, and how to decorate with it. I hope you like it. :)

Happy Monday readers!

Rebecca

PS! If you like Katie’s illustrations you can buy them here in the PaperFashion shop. Shipping from the US is only $6 :)

Snapshots…

This afternoon I’m taking time out to prepare for the second Dream. Find. Do. workshop – this time we are heading to London and being hosted by the super cool Hoxton Hotel. I can’t wait to meet our students and share all my blogging finds from over the last 3 years. I can hardly believe I’ve been blogging that long! (For those of you who want to know more, Sam from A Little London Wedding has just posted her review of the first workshop in Manchester and it’s great read.)

This afternoon I’m sharing some snapshots of the little things that I’m loving right now but I’m also getting discount codes through left, right and centre for the next few days so I have also included a little list of them for any of you who want to get ahead with your Christmas shopping – take advantage and get a bargain! Scroll down after the photo’s for the list.

My Dad’s old Canon SLR (that I learnt to take photo’s with) adding to the interiors books on my picture shelf.

A cute Christmas decoration from my sister that I’m making all-year-round pretty on my wardrobe door handle.

Clothe your walls: Etsy Art

After my post last week on how to hang wall art, it will come as no suprise that I’ve been thinking about choosing some new prints for my walls. I tend to go with themes when choosing art work and most of the pieces in our lounge/dining room are from a series of prints that used to hang in a favourite restaurant of ours which has long since closed down. We contacted the photographer, via the restaurant owner and chose a selection of 6 from his original contact sheets that were commissioned for the restaurant. Now I’m looking for something equally unique at a reasonable price point and of course, the first place to go is Etsy.

I thought I’d share a selection of pieces that I am loving today, all from Etsy and all very reasonably priced. Most are around $35. Although there’s no real theme to my selection, I hope that will mean there’s something to appear to many of you amongst my choices.

Where do you go to find unique wall art and have you got any tips for buying unique pieces?

Ways With Walls

Just recently I’ve been re-evaluating the look and feel I want for my home. Where I’ve kept the styling quite elegant by using symmetrical and formal arrangements of prints and artwork on the walls, I’m not thinking about curating a more eclectic look to the decor. Symmetry has its place and I don’t think I’ll ever tire of the clean aesthetic it gives, it’s certainly the easier route, however, as I’m working on bringing more colour into my home, I’m thinking about creating a more casual feel with looser groupings with a cohesive style, maybe even bringing in more sculptural and textural wall art. All this lead to me doing a lot of pinning and then thinking that I might do a post on ways to hang your art. So here goes… my guide to expressing your creativity on your walls.

Keeping on the straight and narrow Occasionally, you might choose to display a set of prints or photographs all in the same sized frames. For a more formal look that can work in traditional or modern settings, creating a row of prints or an even a couple of rows makes a statement and lends a ‘finished’ look to a room.

1 // 2 (My living room.)

Different sizes lined up against a top or bottom edge If you’ve got a collection of art in similar frames but of different sizes, one idea is to line them all up along one edge when hanging them. It’s more usual to line them up along the bottom edge but there’s no rule that says you have to. Becky used the picture rail as a guide when she hung these certificates and diplomas up in her study, aligning them along the top edge.

1 // 2

Lining up along the bottom edge gives a similar look to these picture shelves which have the added bonus of flexibility – switch around the art to get a different feel seasonally or whenever the urge for change strikes!

Image Credit: Ideas to Steal Different sizes in a group

For a more casual and eclectic feel, why not bunch together a group of art in a random tessellating fashion on your wall. I love this look but it can be hard to pull off. My tip would be to unite your art one way or another. You could choose art in similar styles – a bunch of watercolours for example, or with a unifying colour theme. Provide interest by using a collection of different frames.

1 // 2 // 3 // 4

However if your art has a more random feel, bring different styles together by using the same frames. I love Ribba frames from Ikea. in aluminium, classic black or white they come in a ton of different shapes ad sizes and are inexpensive. We used the black ones throughout our home.

Symmetrical pairings In certain situations a pair of pictures looks like just the finishing touch you need. Over a console table, in a hallway, alcove or above a bed for example a pair of prints, flanked by 2 lamps give a pleasing formal look that suits period homes and bedrooms.

Hanging a low piece over a piece of furniture.
Sometimes the statement isn’t about making a group but about the position you hang a piece of art in. There’s no reason you can’t create the kind of vignette you see in magazine shoots and online but grouping a set of your decor elements together.

Console as bedside.

A side table with a lamp and collection of books, backed by a low hung complimentary piece can give your home that styled look we often crave.

A huge statement piece. A bold decorative choice can be hanging a single statement piece of artwork and it’s a look that I constantly admire in home tours you see in magazines and online.

Image Credit: Miss Moss I think the hardest thing in this case is finding the right piece – with such a statement it has to be something you really love and often you need the right proportions or position in your home to be able to display it effectively. There’s no point putting something of a grand scale in a room where you can never really stand back and get the perspective to appreciate it.

1 // 2

Small homes don’t necessarily need to avoid this look however, think of different perspectives like viewing the piece through a door way, in a mirror or looking down to a hallway from the landing for example.

So, tell me what you prefer when it comes to wall displays and which images have inspired you here….

Rebecca

Friday Frock O’clock

This week’s Friday Frock is from a shop that I don’t think I have featured before on Florence Finds, but for one reason or another I was browsing online recently and spied this bright and breezy summer dress.

When the weather is as bad as it has been recently there’s only two options when it comes to fashion. You can snuggle down in extra layers and sink into a depression about the falling temperatures, or dream of summer days, picnics, seaside trips and country walks. This dress belongs to my preferred option, the latter.

Jersey print and spot dress – Wallis £40 (now in the sale at £32)

I’m imagining it with wedges, a cross body bag and a bicycle, with an ice cream balanced in one hand and a vintage camera in the bike basket… Oh summer, where are you?

Found: Kiss Her by Bianca Hall

Twitter is a wonderful thing, not least because it’s a place for discovery. Today’s ‘find’ actually found me via twitter, and as I quite often look up my new followers to discover who’s really behind the obscure/interesting/plain weird name, @kissherlondon caught my eye.

Sweet Dreams cushion £75 // Night Night cushion £95 // Pillowcase set £29

What I found more than caught my eye. I was full on drooling in no time at all over the neon, (I seem to be having something of a moment over neon) typography and full-on colour in the Kiss Her range by Bianca Hall. One of the things I’ve been looking for since my grey decorating project has been some bright editions to my neutral backdrop and I just love the cushions and their retro circus-like typography.

‘Silence is Golden’ £120 // Lucky £69 // ‘Kiss and Tell’ £49

Those of you who enjoyed Zoe’s colourful home tour last week will no doubt be swooning over the print… head on over to the Kiss Her site to look at the full range as I could have included every single one of them and there are some monochrome and paler ones for the colour shy amongst you.

‘Silence’ and ‘Trust me’ Neon signs, made to order £570

Lastly, if you want to add some rock’n'roll chic to your abode, you’ll have to beat me to the front of the queue for these super-cool neon signs. They’re not cheap but they’re an incredible statement and I am IN LOVE. Le Sigh, to quote Mahj.

Real Homes: Thrifted Colour

This afternoon you’re in for a real treat with a real home tour by Zoe from Conversation Pieces. I knew as soon as I found her blog that I had to ask her to share her home with those of you who don’t already know her via her blog. As Zoe says below, it’s right up my street because of all the colour and the seriously quirky style she has curated through a mixture of ‘finds’, up-cycling and fantastic taste. I am more than a little bit jealous of her colour mixing skills.

When Rebecca first emailed to ask to feature my home, I was delighted… not the least because I’ve always loved how bright and colourful the Florence Finds logo is!

If you’ve come across my home before, you’ll understand why I think we’re a great match. If not, well, this little tour will probably show you why.

So… a little about me. Well, I’m an Edinburgh-based copywriter and freelance writer, who’s secretly a ‘frustrated artist’. Yes, my fondness of interior design comes from the fact that I can’t paint but I can paint furniture. (I think it’s why I also like styling and photography so much too!)

I’m also a bit of a thriftoholic (ok, maybe a big bit). My ideal day sees me hitting a car boot sale early and coming home with lots of lovely finds.

Our home gave me the perfect excuse to hone this ‘talent’… after buying it, we had next to no money (and no furniture) so decorating and furnishing our home had to be done on a very strict budget. Always one for a challenge, I became an expert at recovering old chairs from Freecycle, spotting bargains on ebay and tarting up charity shop finds.

Except that wasn’t the only challenge… the flat we fell in love with and moved into straight away was missing windows, had no heating, no kitchen, no modern plugs and no hot water. We must have been bonkers – but we were head over heels with the place! (The only low point was when my now husband tried to recreate a shower using a plastic bucket and some tepid kettle water over a freezing to touch cast iron bath… I may have uttered a few expletives that day!!)

Fast-forward three years and we still have some bits and pieces to do (no more than most people)… and we have a home filled with colourful things that make us smile. From our wedding sign that hangs in our kitchen to the felt ball rug I made in the living room, everything has a happy memory attached to it.

It’s not the first flat I’ve owned, but it’s the very first that anywhere has ever really felt like ‘home’. Though that’s probably more to do with who I live with… and that the fact that he loves as much colour as I do.

Are you not in awe of Zoe’s talent for combining her finds? This is the sort of home that always makes me green with envy. I never know how you make it look so cohesive, like all those things were meant to be together!

If you’re the car boot type (and I wish I could make myself forsake that Sunday morning lie-in!) then Zoe has some great tips here. Head over and have a look and do tell me your favourite part of her home, I’m way too in awe to choose! Thank you so much for sharing Zoe!

Found: Miss Capricho Watercolour prints

I’m always on the look out for beautiful prints for my walls and recently have been having a real obsession over watercolour illustrations. When I spotted these over on Decor8 I just had to share with you.

Images from Miss Capricho

By Miss Capricho, bursting with colour, they’re feminine, romantic and a little bit quirky, thanks to the subject matter including sushi, coral and fungi as well as the super-pretty butterflies, I though these were just perfect to brighten up your Monday morning.

Images from Miss Capricho

I’m loving the idea of them in an all-white scheme as a splash of elegant colour, or particularly in a pale kitchen or bathroom, lending a dose of personality to a space.
