Style Saver: Re-working the LBD

Good morning readers! Today I’m excited to introduce a new regular contributor to Florence Finds, Michelle. Lots of you will know Michelle already, either as the founder and creative force behind Pocketful of Dreams, the event design house she co-runs,  or as my one-time partner in Dream Find Do. Michelle has already guest posted from time to time here, so it was natural for me to take things one step further and ask her to contribute regularly. This lady has style by the bucketload and we have similar taste, so I know you’re all going to love what she has lined up. Michelle will be our new lifestyle contributor, so you’ll be hearing from her every couple of weeks or so on a variety of topics, all of which will – in true Florence Finds fashion – add a little style to your life. I hope you’ll all give her a warm welcome and enjoy her posts! – Rebecca x

Florence Finds, Michelle Kelly, Pocketful of Dreams

Hello Find-ettes, I am beyond excited to be writing for Florence Finds and hope you enjoy my musings on all things lifestyle. I’ll be sharing all sorts of finds, from fashion items I’m currently coveting through to seasonal updates for your home. There may be a moodboard or two thrown in for good measure as well!!

Today I’m sharing a little style conundrum I’ve been facing recently and that’s how to take the little black dress from drab to dazzling. With a number of events coming up including two awards dinners and two Christmas parties, all with a ‘cocktail-wear’ dress code, I have that “nothing to wear” feeling.

Given that these are work events I’m loathe to spend money on new dresses but have plenty of LBD’s hanging in my wardrobe that rarely get worn as I’m a colour lover nowadays. So I’ve been thinking about how I can make the LBD work harder by adding some carefully chosen accessories for a hint of colour and punch.

Here’s my picks to style up the little black dress…..

Attitude
I could see this outfit working just as well with a leather biker jacket for a night on the town, but as cocktail wear there’s a few subtle edgy pieces to give it that hint of sass.

1. J Crew Citron Stone Necklace £150 2.  Coast Leather Box Bag £65 3. Senso Perspex Heels £40 from Coggles

Classic with a twist
Cobalt blue is such a striking colour and I love how it works with black, this lace sleeved top would be a great way to change up a black cocktail dress worn over or underneath with just the sleeves and neckline peeking through. The addition of a leopard print clutch would stop it feeling too matchy-matchy and provide a funky twist on a classic style.

1. Ted baker lace sleeve top £99.00  2. Nelly Earings £22.95 3. Dune Leopard Clutch £69.00  4.  Coast Celita Ankle Strap £80

Unexpected
This is possibly my favourite look of all three, it’s simple and sophisticated with plenty of punchy colour. I’ve chosen two shades that work great together an ochre yellow and a deep red, with hints of gold, I feel these moodier and warmer colours work really well with black. It’s unexpected yet striking.

1. ASOS collar necklace £30.00 2.Ochre Asymmetric clutch £109.50 3. Ted Baker Neevo pumps £112

Let me know which one is your favourite and do share your own style ideas for funking up the little black dress.

Friday Frock O’clock

This week, I bring you the first of many party dresses. It’s time to start thinking about office parties, Christmas Parties, New Year’s Eve and even Christmas weddings. You can absolutely never ever go wrong with an all over sequinned dress and this one from MANGO has my favourite style of boat neck, cap (slightly on the fierce side) sleeves and a rather lovely belt too.

Sequin velvet dress – MANGO £79

It reminds me of Gwyntheths kick ass red carpet come-back when promoting Iron Man and if we can all look that good, well, then I’ll consider my job done 😉

Happy weekend readers,

Yesterday I headed into Manchester city centre to meet my Mum for a spot of shopping. I’d had in mind to purchase a skirt I had seen back in Bath a few weeks ago from Marks and Spencer and also to pick up the polka spot chambray shirt in GAP that I instagrammed from there too. (Anyone who saw and wanted it, it’s gone down to £24.99 in the sale.)

While I was in Marks and Spencer I spotted this dress, which really caught my eye for it’s simplistic yet graphic design.

The nude backdrop gives the dress a cut out look and the whole feel of the dress is much more expensive than it’s £45 price tag. I can really see this going the distance right through from now (It’s a pretty light fabric for warmer evenings,) all the way to Christmas parties and working day to night with ease if you layer up with a jumper on top or a shirt underneath. I know I always go on about items working hard, but when you’re on a budget or saving the pennies I think it’s a really important consideration and a perfect way to make a dress work hard. I don’t believe in saving things for best. At this price there’s no need and if you don’t wear it, you’ll have gone off it in a couple of seasons, so you might as well enjoy it now!

Happy weekend readers!

I’ve always thought that people who go for a tough look in their fashion tastes are trying to cover something up… some insecurity or self doubt that studs and biker boots might cure. That said, there’s always a day when we need a little extra armoury against the world, like fashionable cotton wool to protect ourselves against life’s daily stresses.

One of those items that everybody needs in their armoury is a little black dress and whether you’ve got a bit of a cold and have to attend an event, or you’re feeling mentally under the weather this is the dress that will have you looking fierce and fabulous, whatever is on the inside.

Being black of course it will be flattering (and I even suspect this is a transitional dress that would work equally well in pregnancy or in the months following having a baby,) being knee length and suitably covered up across an expanding chest area. Ok, it’s not the most summery of dresses but you could make it more seasonal with a nude jacket and shoes or work a monochrome look for an event. More importantly, it gave me a good excuse to highlight the AllSaints sale which has now started and to whip up a bit of a kick-ass outfit, in case you should be requiring one. I have totally got my eye on that necklace.

There’s a few other sales that have started late, notably Monsoon, Accessorize, Zara, MANGO and The White Company.

Happy shopping this weekend readers and do share what you have bought on the Florence Finds facebook page, Tweet me @FlorenceFinds, or pop on here and leave a comment.
