How to Wear: August

Hi there Readers

I have a confession to make… I categorically said last month that I’d take more photos of what I wore during August but I have failed at that mission. I’m sorry. To be honest though, it’s mostly been a variation on the recurring theme that has been Summer 2015 – denim and khaki – my Maternity Leave uniform ;)

Stripe Top – H&M // Khaki Jacket – Karen Millen // Jeans – H&M // Trainers – Adidas Stan Smith

The weather hasn’t helped the fact that I’ve lived in jeans either, and I hope it’s marginally better for September as we are off on our holidays – a staycation to somewhere that Rebecca actually recommended. I’m really looking forward to our break as a foursome!

I have managed to wear a few of my summer purchases this month though. Some Snakeskin Ghillie flats made an appearance mid month, and the khaki jumpsuit got an airing.

T-Shirt – Cos // Jeans – Topshop // Shoes – Topshop

Jumpsuit and Shoes – Topshop

I also wore a boyfriend shirt into London for a day of work meetings – perfect to dress up some jeans paired with jewelled sandals.

Trench Coat – F&F // Shirt – Topshop // Jeans – J Crew // Shoes – Clarks

However last week was slightly different in that a) I was able to get dressed up a bit for a friends 10th Wedding Anniversary Party – it felt good to spend some time on my face and hair and wear a dress (albeit a BF friendly one!)

Dress – & Other Stories

and b) I WENT FOR A RUN! 4.19 miles in 45 minutes – not bad considering it’s been 9 months since I did any real running. I’m hoping the motivation will continue.

Running Kit – Nike

I’ll be back in a couple of weeks with my thoughts on September purchases. As Rebecca alluded to, there’s some cracking AW purchases to be made now.

What to Buy: February

Happy February Readers!

Although I do hate to wish time away, as I feel it speeds along so fast at the best of times, I’m glad we are now firmly in to 2015, and thoughts can be turned to Spring, and all the new-ness that comes with it.

The January sales seemed to last forever, and it’s really nice to see the new season stock coming in, especially when the trends for SS15 are not only beautiful, but really quite wearable too.

It’s a tradition of mine since I was at school to buy a copy of Vogue for my Mum twice a year for their Catwalk Report, and this still continues 20 years later! When I was living at home, I used to earmark the pages for Mum who would then make me something from the season (she’s a Bio-Chemist but loves to dress-make in her spare time), and she still uses the pages for her inspiration now.

This issue didn’t disappoint, and here is a round up of my favourite trends of the season.

Denim with a Difference

ASOS Dress / H&M Girlfriend Jeans

This take on the Denim trend takes me back a little to my late teens, when I LIVED in a Denim pinafore dress that Mum had actually made me. There’s an M&S Full Skirt that I’m waiting to come into store which looks perfect, but in the meantime, I love the easy look of this ASOS White dress and the patchwork pattern really lives up to the “with a difference” tag. H&M are also on fire with their jeans selection at the moment. If you haven’t tried their “girlfriend” fit I urge you too. Skinner than Boyfriend, but a slightly higher cut (something I prefer now I must admit!) and not too tight on the leg, the silhouette they give is great with flats or heels. This distressed pair would look great with a sweatshirt now, or strappy cami come the warmer weather.

It’s all about the Stripes

Next Skirt / Boden Top / M&S Shoes / TopShop Dress

I really never do tire of a stripe, and they are set to be big this season on everything from clothing to accessories. Bold colours, monochrome or the classic Bretton, anything goes really. This is good news for me, as a LOT of my wardrobe is already stripes, but I am drawn to these M&S shoes (sold out in my size, BOO!) and also this Boden top is very like the Karen Millen dress I’ve been living in this winter. I also love the way that some stores have styled stripes with other prints in this summer – Next, I’m looking at you :) There’s lots of choice out there so just go for a colourway and size that you know suits you.

Fancy Florals

Next Shirt / H&M Trousers / Boden Trainers / TopShop Trousers

As the Vogue supplement suggests, flowers are big news in SS15 and what I really love is that it’s not just one particular print. From big and bold cartoony type prints, to the more chintzy Liberty-esque styles, again, there is something to suit everyone. I personally think the bolder the better, but I think I’m in the same camp as Rebecca here – having grown up with Rainbow Bright as a style icon ;) I love this Next shirt, especially teamed up with the stripe pencil skirt, and these Topshop trousers, although not strictly floral, really drew my eye in the iciness that was NYC last week. I may just have to get these and store them in my post-baby box to wear come the late Spring.

On the Fringe

J.Crew Top / H&M Bag / Zara Boots / ASOS Bag

Fringing was around last season, but it’s not going anywhere fast, and you can now find it not only adorning accessories, but clothing too. Although I’m not what you’d class as a hippy chick, there are ways to nod to this trend. These Zara boots are a nice way in, as is this J.Crew top, which when worn with slim trousers or jeans, gives just enough movement to satisfy that swish. For something a little easier to wear, the blogger-favourite H&M bag is now back in stock, and although I know this isn’t actually fringing per se, the ASOS clutch has a gorgeous tactile look to it.

Jump to it

H&M / Zara / Mango

It’s so much more commonplace now to see a Jumpsuit in your favourite shop. Actually really easy to wear (although granted, NOT that easy when nature calls) they can be dressed up or down depending on the look you are going for. These three jumpsuits really stood out for me, mostly down to the print on the first two, and the shape of the third. Personally, I prefer a jumpsuit that looks less like a boiler suit, but that’s because I’ve not found a “boiler-suit” one that suits me. I’d be interested to know if any of you guys have.

Now, this is a fashion column I know, but I wanted to just touch a minute on a couple of beauty buys I’ve found and wanted to share, hope you don’t mind. I’m not saying they are must buys, but I’ve certainly found them revolutionary. First up with Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate. I bought this on a flight back from the US towards the end of last year, and have used it nightly, give or take a few misses, ever since. It smells wonderful, and really moisturises my skin. I’ve found with about three months use, texture is better and I do actually look less tired and worn out without make it – a big achievement!

The other is the lip products by Bite Beauty. Now Rebecca mentioned these a while ago on this blog and I bought a couple then (when Cocosa was selling them) and ever since, I’ve picked one up in the US (they are sold in Sephora) when I’ve been there. You can pick them up on eBay, and Sephora now ship to the UK, but my favourites are the High Pigment Pencils (Zinfandel is my go-to) and the Matt Creme Lip Crayons. The colours are mostly bold (which I love) but it’s the fact they are made with natural ingredients, and don’t make my lips feel dry at all that I like the most.

So that’s my tips for February readers. I’d love to see if you bought something from here, or from one of the trends above. Do share if you do, by using #ffWTBFeb on Insta or Twitter.

Until the end of the month… :)

Spotted: New Look Denim

One of the things I need this season is a pair of new jeans, not cutting edge fashion, but necessary none the less. The thing is, I’m on a budget right now and I have precisely zero experience in shopping for jeans on the high street. Usually I buy ‘designer’ in the sale and spend maybe £50-100 – a fact that has long been the subject of amusement amongst my friends as I’ll easily spend more on a dress thats worn only a few times, yet if I consider cost-per-wear, they must be the most hardworking item in my wardrobe. That not withstanding, I’m looking after the pennies so the pounds can look after themselves and that means well priced jeans.

New Look are relaunching their denim collection (check out the dungarees for serious fashion points this season or the denim shirts for a bit of denim on denim action.) As a result, I thought I’d look them up and select a few of my picks for the coming season. Fortunately for me, the majority are skinny cuts as I’m thinking ahead to wear with ankle boots this winter, but I see they have kept a flattering bootcut for curvy silhouettes.

  1. I didn’t quite get around to trying the coated jean last season but at this price (£23) it’s a trend that’s worth a try.
  2. This season, lengths are cropped, including tops so think about a high waist to rock a shorter length knit this season.
  3. All summer I’ve loved a turn up and I’ve no intention of giving up on them now so this distressed turned up skinny will be perfect for the weekend with converse or distressed boots, and a slouchy top.
  4. If you prefer a bootcut, I love this dark blue vintage wash pair with a wide belt.

Have you tried New Look jeans? Are you looking for a new pair this season?

Love,
Rebecca

What to Wear: Sexy Boyfriend Jean

I don’t mind admitting, I haven’t bought a new pair of jeans for a couple of years now. There are 2 reasons for that. Firstly I am ahem, a bit heavier (still, yes, I know!) than I would prefer to be and kept convincing myself that I should wait and lose some weight before buying another pair. (Flawed logic, as if I lost weight I wouldn’t need new jeans… I’d be able to fit into the numerous pairs I already have.) Secondly I cannot stand shopping for jeans. It’s boring, frustrating and often soul destroying trying to pour yourself into yet another pair that don’t flatter, aren’t the right shape for you (what is that shape anyway, anyone who knows, do share,) and make you feel worse than when you started. So it was with relief that I managed to purchase this pair, the first I tried on, on a trip to GAP.

Jeans, GAP // Top, Marks and Spencer // Scarf (old), GAP // Ring, Accessorize // Nails, Mavala // Shoes, Clarks

I love the current trend for flashing a bit of ankle in cropped trousers and the slightly slouchy ‘boyfriend style’ of jeans that are on-trend right now feel like the ideal weekend alternative. I thought it was going to be a nightmare finding the right pair, but knew GAP did a style they call the ‘sexy boyfriend‘ and thought I would give them a go. In an up to date paler distressed wash than I would usually go for, I was pleasantly surprised by the fit and snapped them up.

It feels good to be back in jeans again, even if not for virtuous reasons and I’ve worn them non-stop ever since, often with my other recent purchase, these ponyskin, leopard print slipper flats – an absolute steal and from Clarks of all places at £39.99. They feel well made and smart with cushioned insoles and I still can’t believe that Clarks quality comes with serious style credentials. Who knew?

I teamed the jeans and leopard print with an unexpected flash of red on my nails – I don’t usually wear red as I associate it with a vintage look that I rarely aspire towards, but for some reason right now it feels fresh, particularly on short nails and when rocking a bejewelled fox ring that is equal parts cute and quirky.

Have you got any favourite jeans to share or have you tried the Sexy Boyfriend from GAP?

Rebecca

Friday Frock O’clock

I’m having a real thing about denim right now, specifically chambray shirts and I have always loved a good shirt dress, so this latest find of a frock was right up my street.

Oasis utility shirt dress – £50

With all the rain we have been having I have been searching for something just to brighten life up a little, but couldn’t face another floral, brightly coloured or shiver-inducing dress. This is perfect for layering and a killer weekend dress that you could even dress up for the evening with some quirky heels and sparkly jewels. Even though I tend to opt for separates for casual dressing and this could be the dress to change all that…

Do you like readers? And what frock have you been lusting after this week?

What to Wear: A Blue and Yellow weekend

Sometimes I write these What To Wear posts because I’m trying out a new trend that I like or because I want to share with you guys ideas about how to wear a particular trend. Other times I might just be particularly pleased with an outfit. I might share them because they make me happy. And lastly, sometimes I think I’ll share something that’s quite simple and today’s outfit is one of those. Despite my interest in fashion and trends, the majority of the time I’m running around doing exactly what you guys do. This last weekend that included an informal day time housewarming-come-baby shower, followed by a trip to see my brother and sister-in-law and my niece for dinner, then breakfast with them and their friends, followed by general Sunday slouching. I know you guys like seeing how a real person wears things so I thought I’d share my weekend outfit…

Being British, my clothing is generally dictated, and oft thwarted by the weather. This weekend saw a window of warmer weather before the cold returned (I took these on Sunday when it was freezing – hence the red nose and slightly strained expression!) and I was desperate to wear my new purchase from Whistles (don’t forget the 25% discount with Grazia – today is the last day you can pick one up in the shops, but you can use the online code until Tuesday the 13th.) I’ve been lusting after this oversized yellow striped knit for several weeks and snapped it up as soon as the discount came out.

Something else I was desperate to wear was this chunky turquoise and royal blue necklace that I shared last weekend, from Banana Republic and it turned out the brights worked really well together. On sunny Saturday I wore them both with my pink trousers, but when the weather changed slightly I switched to more season appropriate jeans and black accessories – my trusty leather jacket (the extended shoulder leather jacket, also from Whistles) and new pointy flats from GAP (even better, their spring sale starts today with up to 50% off with free shipping today only on orders over £30. Use the code FREE30!) I’m just loving a pointed toe right now. :)

For me at the moment, it’s still all about making new season style work in the never ending British winter and this outfit certainly cheered me up dispute the weather cooling down.

As always, let me know what you’re wearing right now and if I’ve inspired your style choices…

Love,
Rebecca
