The Fash Flash: A NY (capsule) state of mind

One of the things that has struck me about putting my Autumn capsule together has been the positive and lasting effect capsule wardrobe planning has had on me. This Autumn marks my 12 month anniversary of building and living with a capsule wardrobe. I honestly don’t cheat and if you don’t see it on here I don’t wear it – everything else gets stored away, donated or sold. Sometimes when I’m building my wardrobe at the beginning of a season I feel frivolous updating my wardrobe and spending what amounts to quite a bit of money in a short space of time but while I was away recently it came to my attention that I have become really choosy about the pieces I buy. More than a few times I was heard saying ‘I’m going to leave this, I don’t love it.’ – Words to live by people.

I’ve always been a massive fan of American retailers and though my tastes have changed over the years I’ve been shopping there on holidays (GAP, Macys, the discount department stores, to newer favourites of American Eagle, J.Crew and now, Madewell,)I always come back with a stuffed suitcase. This year it was a finely edited selection and I thought I’d share a few pieces with you ahead of my capsule wardrobe reveal.

Lydia flat (sale instore purchase, but a couple available here) – I’ve been after a pair of animal print flats as a wardrobe classic that will last for many a season for ages, so I snapped this pair up in the sale.

Bite beauty Lush Lip tint in Watermelon – my favourite super-moisturising lipstick in a new rosy-nude shade for Autumn.

Shapeline Bangle set – Madewell. Because my capsule doesn’t include accessories 😉

Transport Tote – Madewell. Remember how I wrote this post on looking for a tote bag? well, really, I wanted this one but I didn’t realise it came in my favourite shade-of-the-seaosn, this dark merlot colour.l (Tip! I got it mongrammed!)

Sunglasses – American Eagle – I forgot mine and we were fortunate to have great weather for much of the trip so I tested out my first pair of aviators with a budget pair while I got used to the new shape on me.

Nike Free trainers (girls range – did you know they’re a lot cheaper and go up to size 6?) – After September Shape up, I’m still intent on getting back to exercise and needed some new trainers. This is the first pair I’ve purchased in the lighter ‘free’ style and The colour works with my capsule too for wearing-around-town trainer days.

Boyfriend shirt – J.Crew – I love checked shirts but already have two in bright cranberry shades so when I saw this one in a fresher blue and white combo that will brighten up my monotone capsule and last into winter and spring, I snapped it up.

Resolution true skinny Jeans – GAP. I always try to save trainer and jeans purchases for in the US if I’m planning a trip and I was finally able to buy a pair in my usual size while we were away, although after all the over indulgence, I’m not sure if I’ll still fit them now we are back. 😉

I’ll be back with more holiday stores too including itineraries, where we stayed and what we did, but let me know if this is looking a lot like your favourite wardrobe pieces now too !

Love, Rebecca

My Month… June

The end of June is nigh which means Wimbledon, warmer weather (fingers crossed) and Barbecues with lots and lots of Rose. Or something like that. In the meantime, I’m looking back at my month, through my Instagram snaps. Enjoy!

  • Meeting up with friends post holiday for dinner at Australasia and wearing my new French Connection beaded top.
  • Nail kit out ready for the wedding we attended in Scotland at the beginning of the month, held in a marquee on the loch. See my print match outfit here and my destination guide here.
  • Trying out my new Bite lip colours – read the review here.
  • Toes in the sand at the beach wedding ceremony and embracing the traditional decor at the Glenfinnan House hotel.
  • Living in my Hunter Wellies…
  • Busting out my new Anthropologie forks for Michelle visiting for lunch and inspiring chat.
  • Visiting the Chanel nail bar in Selfridges Bull ring with my sister and choosing this peachy orange shade to take away with me (the polish is thrown in as part of the mani!)
  • Coldplay concert!
  • The gorgeous coral peonies I got from Blossom and the various shades of coral, pink, blush, peach, lemon and cream they turned as they aged.
  • Blue nails later in the month – Nails Inc Baker Street.
  • Admiring my handiwork from the Ruby Rhino furniture painting workshop – Did you read my review? There’s a special offer for readers booking onto the course!
  • I got my holiday Instagram snaps printed out @Firebox. Next thing, how to display them?
  • A pair of Zara sandals I lusted after but didn’t buy – did you know the Zara sale starts today?
  • Ahem, a sale purchase. Least said about that little splurge the better…
  • Finally getting round to making my accessories cupboard more useable and displaying my necklaces.
  • Loving this combination of deep lilac stocks with white freesia against the grey walls in our living room.

Hope you’ve enjoyed this months round up… what did June bring for you?

Love,
Rebecca

Found: BITE Beauty

It’s not infrequent now that I get offered something free to review for Florence Finds. What doesn’t happen often is that I actually say yes. I have quite strict mental criteria for accepting complimentary products or hotel stays for example. It has to be something that I like first and foremost, because I frankly don’t have time to spend somewhere I don’t want to be, in the case of a hotel. And secondly because I don’t have room for mountains of free but not-to-my-taste items. Secondly and of equal importance is that I have to think at least a particular group of my readers will be interested in the review. It has to be something I can see you buying, wearing or enjoying. Lastly I can’t take the ethical guilt of accepting ‘stuff’ I don’t like (and therefore won’t review) which just ends up in the bin.

When I was contacted about Bite Beauty and it was suggested I might like to try out their new range of lipsticks, exclusive to Cocosa (the online luxury discount destination for flash sales,) who have recently introduced beauty products to their range, my attention was seized immediately. (You know I love a great lip colour!) That developed into a curiosity about their claims to be antioxidant, age defying and Good enough to Eat.

I don’t know if it has ever crossed your mind, but I once read that the average woman eats, or ingests accidentally by way of lipstick coming off on your teeth, tongue and food, 8 lipsticks per year. I don’t know if that’s true but given the unimaginable amount of chemicals I suspect goes in to the average lipstick, Bite’s claims of ‘food grade’ lipsticks made me think that they may just have something with an idea like that.

Second thought? Surely it’s a bit of a gimmick?

The parcel arrived last week. Sexy packaging? Check. Shaped ‘in four different moulds to reflect how each different Bite woman applies her lipstick’ in case you’re interested. Vibrant colours? Check. Lovely smell? Check again…

I was sent 4 products and got stuck right in with the High Pigment Pencil which I suspected might be a bit dry… it wasn’t, gliding on smoothly and giving a really nice sheen with punchy dense colour. (This is what I’m wearing in the photo’s.) Each product reportedly has the same antioxidant found in red wine and is full of fruit butters, essential oils and jojoba beads for hydration.

Next up was the Lush Lip Tint in Lychee, (the product you can see here with a central moisturising ‘core’ in the shape of a B.) Although I’m quite new to nudes, I loved this shade for work and it was beautifully moisturising.

Lastly, I ventured into the Luminous Creme Lipsticks and found once again a silky texture, great depth of colour and hydrating formulas that last. That is always my main gripe with lipstick, the trade off between lasting formulas and the drying effects that requires. No such problem here.

I loved them, freebie or not and have used them non-stop since unwrapping the package. I’ll definitely be looking to replenish my collection when they run out – no gimmicks, great texture and losing that niggling thought about those 8 lipsticks a year is only a bonus… 😉

Have you heard of Bite Beauty?
