Looking back…

Today is usually the day that I share my Instagram round up of the month, but on the last day of the year I feel more like looking back once more, before the calendar moves forward.

It might sound strange but at the beginning of 2012 I had an overwhelming sense of positivity for what was to come. I just knew 2012 was going to be good. Perhaps that was because 2011 had been an epic struggle at times, in my career, as a blogger, it was only my relationship that had held fast throughout. 2012 has more than lived up to expectations and I feel the same sense of excitement now to see what 2013 brings.

I promised myself that we would go away more and Pete and I had several breaks. In January we went to The Drawing Room in the Elan Valley and it was so good we’re going back this January, this time with Jess and Dan.

In February we went to Italy to Ski and March saw us in Shoreditch at The Hoxton.

In May we did a long-awaited road trip from San Francisco via Yosemite, Sequoia National Park and Death Valley to Las Vegas.

June saw us on the West Coast of Scotland in Arisaig for a family wedding, in July I went with my Mum and sister to Bath and the Thermae Spa, and in September Pete and I went to Cornwall to The Llawnroc before another wedding in Farnham and stayed at The Aviator.

November saw us back in America visiting Florida (and Disney) for some R&R, ending up in Miami via the Everglades. I really can say I fulfilled that ambition!

After qualifying in 2011, 2012 was the year I found my feet at work. Although I work as a locum, for the majority of the year I have been in the same practice and it’s given me a huge amount more confidence as I settle into the responsibility of being a fully fledged GP. Now I finally feel ready to settle down into a more permanent job if the right one comes along. I also almost burst with pride as Pete got a job he wanted and loves. Hopefully he’ll be there for a long time.

And of course, I turned 30… 😉

Florence Finds has gone from strength to strength. Almost 2,000 of you pop into Florence Finds on a daily basis, which frankly just blows my mind. Heading off to London Fashion Week and being nominated for 2 Cosmo Blog awards was pretty exciting, as well as my first magazine mention in Closer Magazine and later writing for Company Mag. And of course, with Michelle I launched Dream. Find. Do. and held our first 2 workshops.

Besides all of that though, the blog has given me great pleasure. I’ve planned decor projects, documented my cooking adventures, met new people, and had fun with my wardrobe, not to mention enjoyed reaching new readers. Thank you so much to all of you who come here and help to give Florence Finds the community that I treasure.

If you have time today, spend ten minutes thinking about what you have achieved this year and give yourself credit where it’s due, even if that’s for surviving a less than perfect year. Please share your highs and lows in the comments box – all comments welcome, no matter how epic!

See you on the other side readers!

Love,
Rebecca

  1. Fantastic post Rebecca! It’s made me smile as I was just thinking last night that 2012 has been epic for me and I can’t wait for 2013 to start. The absolute high was having our Son right in the middle of the year in July. Prior to and with that did come some lows but that’s all part of Motherhood. I’m really looking forward to 2013 as a family.

  2. 2012 was amazing for me in many ways – we sold our flat, bought our dream home, my husband got a job that made him happy and fulfilled, and in November, we became parents to Toby. Ooh, and I won a FF competition too!

Sadly, I lost a good friend and my beloved Granda to cancer this year, but they would want us to move forward with positivity, which I am looking forward in to 2013

  3. Rebecca I don’t honestly know how you have TIME to do all this. Superwoman! 2012 has been challenging but ultimately rewarding for me, I’m ending the year as happy as I can remember being for years. Bring on 2013!

  4. Wow, Rebecca, that was quite a year, congratulations.
I just wrote a post on the highs and lows… for us 2012 was hard… even if we did travel quite a bit. But there are things we can’t control… and some that seem out of our reach. I am positive for 2013 and I think I am slowly getting to a place where I can be happy no matter what..

  5. Great post! I never think to look back and reflect on a year, I always just look forward so I’m going to reflect on what has been a TOUGH year!
Returned to work in January after 7 months maternity leave to discover I was pregnant again in feb, and that was an exhausting 9 months! That ultimately gave us our amazing 2nd daughter, 1st wedding anniversary celebrated at the hand & flower which was an incredible surprise, but mainly learning to live on a tight budget!
I completely failed on finding time to blog but that amongst other things is something I plan to rectify in lucky 2013!

    • That’s exactly why I wrote this Gemma – I never look back, always forwards, but it’s lovely to see what you did and achieved and reflect on how you have changed as a person. It’s worth looking back to learn rather than to dwell!

      • Couldn’t agree more!
Congrats on another great year on the blog and here’s to a fantastic 2013!
Happy new year Florence & the findettes – you all rock my world

  6. Congratulations on a fantastic year Rebecca- I’ve really enjoyed my daily read of Florence Finds and although I don’t comment much it’s become a firm fixture in my tea break blog reading! 2012 has been an odd year for me with some huge highs (getting married, finding out I was pregnant), but with some huge lows too (my mum passed away just before Christmas). I have high hopes for 2013 though and, joining in with your spirit of positivity, feel it’s going to be a good year! Happy new year one and all!

  7. Great post – this has spurred me into doing our annual ‘What We’ve Done This Year’ list so that I can get photos printed and put into our special photo album (it’s sort of the story of us, if that’s not too soppy!). Whilst I’ve mostly concentrated on the things we’ve done, places we’ve visited etc, it’s also made me think about the year as a whole – we’ve had a lot of frustration with trying to sell a flat and move on to somewhere bigger, and also work challenges, but all in all 2012 has been a pretty good one!

Looking forward to 2013 and also some #JanuaryJoy – see you all on the other side!
