Bedside style…

This afternoon’s post is a bit of a rambling one, but you know what, sometimes you’ve just got to get it all out. Plus, I’m really looking forward to getting an opinion on what you guys like.

Our bedroom was redecorated a couple of years ago now (I’ll share it with you guys sometime soon,) and although I still like the original style, I’m kinda ready for a bit of a switch around. One of the things we didn’t change was the bedsides. We have some classic white IKEA bedsides which I like because they are tall, but I’m really not in love with any more. Trouble is, I’m struggling a bit to find something that I really like to replace them. So they have lived to fight another day.

Midcentury modern low wooden bedside // Tallboy // Crates // Wooden stool

Don’t get me wrong. I have had tons of ideas. First up, I wanted to add a touch of warmth to the predominately white room and thought about getting a salvaged item (like a couple of stacked crates,) or a piece of stylish second hand furniture. You know how hard it is to come across one of those though, right? I like the idea of repurposing something else, like a stool or chair and I also like seeing items of furniture that aren’t bedsides, being used in alternative ways. Like the tall boy above or, hello gorgeous console…

Console as bedside.

Unfortunately, my beside drawer is a hell-hole of items that I like near me when I’m in bed. Everything from receipts that were culled in the last purse clear out, to matches, sticky rollers for cat hair and hand cream. None of which are catered for in this storage-deficient beauty.

Blue bedside lamp // Acrylic (or lucite as they call it in the US) console as bedside.

I’ve thought about sticking with white and I particularly love the many single drawer bedsides like the one on the left above, or whilst I was browsing for this feature, I came across these acrylic ones which give a great illusion of light and space. Here we are again with the hiding the clutter thing though.

Silver leaf // Mirrored bedside

I already have a mirrored dressing table and as a result, I’ve been wondering about getting mirrored bedsides, but I’m just not sure if that’s a little too glamorous for my current tastes. I like to knock back the luxe look with a bit of rustic rough-about-the-edges-ness.

Luggage

I’ve seen loads of stacked up luggage options (although most are Louis Vuitton and I really don’t love that logo,) but they don’t seem all that practical either – great storage, but can you imagine unstacking them every time you wanted to get in?

Blue bedside and navy walls.

Right now, foremost in my mind is adding some colour to the bedroom, so the idea of a coloured cabinet is very appealing. I love turquoise, but I’m not sure how I’m going to feel about it come the winter months. Will it look out of place and ill-conceived?

So, tell me readers what you have got, or what you’re lusting after and if you’ve got any advice for me. I’d love to hear what your thoughts are on my selection today too…

Love,
Rebecca

  1. I’ve currently got the same dilemma, and one of the things I have been thinking about is what sort of house we will live in next. I prefer to buy pieces that last, and don’t want to have to buy loads of new furniture for a new house.

I don”t think I could cope with mirrored furniture – doesn’t it just attract dust and fingerprints?! Good luck with the search.

  2. You’ve also just read my mind. We’re in the gradual process of upscaling our furniture (i.e. replacing the Ikea furniture we bought when we had no money with some better quality things) but finding it really difficult to choose investment pieces that we don’t mind spending money on because we hope they will last for years to come. How to choose something that reflects our style and looks funky now but won’t be out of date in 5 years time? I completely agree that cool vintage would be lovely, but I never seem to be able to find the same kind of bargains as other people (or perhaps I’m not brave enough to plant a G-plan coffee table in my lounge without worrying it will look like my parents’ house c.1981). Also struggling slightly with a husband who seems to passionately dislike all the things I find and fall in love with, but doesn’t offer up any alternatives of his own…. The only thing we ever fall out about is home decoration!

  3. I am in the same quandry… and have the same tall ikea cream besides that you have! I was looking to go down the antique route and even thought of going for mismatched bedsides but I have yet to find anything suitable. I love the console style tables. Have you tried John Lewis or Feather&Black? Also in regards to colour I think its always best to stick with neutral and/or classic styles as they never date. Good luck.

  4. Deciding on furniture can be so difficult! My bf and I had similar deliberations when trying to decide what to keep our record collections in- we settled on brand new vintage looking crates (these things are seriously rustic, but without the cobwebs and/or broken slats) from http://www.crates4you.com/ I think they look pretty good (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VHkWvk3eceM/UCfmaS7_NbI/AAAAAAAAA5Y/7Xckg9Aq5H4/s640/fruit_crate_record_storage.jpg)

I’ve got two vintage trunks/suitcases as my bedside table- the bottom one is my “memory trunk” filled with old photos/birthday cards etc. so I don’t need to access it very often (I can see how lifting them off to access the bottom stuff could get annoying).

You could buy something you like the shape of and then paint it/cover it yourself. I’ve had a lot of compliments on this chest of drawers that I covered in maps- and the whole thing only cost me 50p! http://hooklineandsinkher2.blogspot.co.uk/2012/07/my-50p-chest-of-drawers.html

Good luck making your decision! I hope you find something “just right” soon 🙂

  5. I’ve been on the look out for bedside tables too, like you I want something with a draw as I know I wouldnt keep it as neat as the beautiful styled images you see of stacked crates etc, I need my crap and I don’t to worry about it looking great coz it’s on display. Love those console tables despite all of the above though! Please let me know what you decide on!!

  6. Um. It’s possible I just have an extremely dirty mind – but cast your eye to the top right picture, the one with the pretty star mirror. Are those flowers contained in an, ahem, rather phallic-shaped vase??

I love the darker tones of the mid-century pieces, by the way.

    • Cece. You are possibly the first person to ever say ‘phallic’ on FF. Brilliant! I LOVE it. Although if that is the case then I will refrain from mentioning the dubious choice of foliage/florals that accompany it! 😉

  7. We’ve just redecorated our bedroom and after loads of looking we ended up with Ikea ones! I am the same with clutter and really had to have something with drawers or a cupboard which could hide all the rubbish which ends up in mine.We were also really limited because we needed a narrow one to fit in the alcove our bed is in and in the end the ikea one was the only reasonably priced one that fitted.

Love the crates but have to accept I’m too messy for them!
